Jeff Downing was born in Houston, Texas.

Jeff was raised on the northwest side of Houston, where he attended Ermel Elementary, Hoffman Middle School and Eisenhower High School in the Aldine District.

Jeff was involved in various school activities, including Student Council, National Honor Society, and National Art Honor Society. He was also very active in the Youth of the United Methodist Church, and Northwest District of the United Methodist Youth. In 1994, he was elected President of the District and went on to serve on the state and national levels for the United Methodist Youth Organization. The summer preceding his senior year of high school, Jeff was elected chair of the Methodist Youth Organization. His responsibilities included planning and structuring national and global objectives for the youth of the United Methodist Church, budgeting and organizing Youth ’95, and acting as the head of the youth for the church.

After graduating from high school, Jeff attended Texas A&M University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in political studies, with a minor in religious studies.

Immediately after graduating from Texas A&M, Jeff moved to Washington, D. C. to work in the White House as an intern for the Clinton Administration.

After serving in the White House, Jeff returned to Houston and went to work for Harris County as a court coordinator in Harris County Criminal Court # 14 under Judge Mike Fields. While working at the Court, Jeff decided to fulfill a goal of attending law school and becoming an attorney. Jeff enrolled in South Texas College of Law and furthered his family legacy. His grandfather, uncle, aunt, and cousin are alumni of South Texas. While attending law school, Jeff interned at the Harris County District Attorney’s office. Jeff earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence in May of 2005. After passing the bar, Jeff joined the District Attorney’s office as a prosecutor.

Jeff later opened his own successful firm, The Downing Law Firm, focusing his practice on criminal defense, juvenile, family law, and general litigation.

Jeff is active in his community. He is a member of St. Timothy’s Methodist Church, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Gatekeeper’s Committee, and the Lawyers in Public Schools Committee for the Houston Bar Association – serving Spring Branch Independent School District . He has also served on the ChildBuilders Young Professionals Board, Citizens Environmental Coalition, Board of the Greater Inwood Partnership, and other local and neighborhood groups.

Jeff resides in Oak Forest. In August, Jeff will be married to Taneka Johnson, an attorney.
